This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
